Dr. Aubrey Levin: How former forensic psychiatrist's "sick strategy" failed to stop the trial. Columnist Kevin Martin. Calgary Sun.

COMMENTARY:  "Sick strategy failed Dr. Aubrey Levin," by reporter Kevin Martin, published in the Calgary Sun on February 1, 2013.

GIST:  "Levin’s geriatric psychiatrist said it would be a travesty of justice to force him to stand trial because of advancing vascular dementia, while his wife, Erica, testified his mind had deteriorated greatly. The woman, who is under criminal investigation after one juror said she was offered a bribe to acquit Levin, said her husband even had trouble dressing himself. As court heard about the doctor’s failing mental health, he sat staring blankly into space, seemingly disinterested in the proceedings. But once he was declared fit, Levin became a new man, taking notes and instructing his counsel. Levin also surprisingly recovered from a near-deadly drop in his heart rate when he was hospitalized shortly after the case began. Initially it was thought he’d need a pacemaker, but it was later determined he had overdosed on eye drops, causing the medical emergency."
