Michael Morton: Statesman reporter Chuck Lindell says the Anderson inquiry played to two audiences: American - Statesman. Must Read. HL.

STORY: "Anderson inquiry played to 2 audiences," by reporter Chuck Lindell, published by the American-Statesman on February 9, 2013. (Chuck Lindell, who has covered legal affairs since 2005, has written dozens of stories on Michael Morton’s case, beginning with the 2008 court appeal calling for DNA tests that would lead to his exoneration.)

GIST:  "Nichols used some of that spotlight to portray Anderson as an aggrieved party, the victim of overly zealous lawyers with the Innocence Project who contorted facts and stretched insinuations, then failed to correct the record when new details cleared Anderson of certain allegations. “After being through this exercise of having affidavits filed accusing you of certain things,” Nichols asked Anderson, “of having reports filed with the public (and) being reported in the media of matters that have been proven demonstrably to be false, do you, sir, have an increased sense of understanding from what it means to be falsely accused?” “Yes sir, I do,” Anderson replied. It was a potentially risky tactic. Portraying Anderson as a victim invited inevitable comparisons to another victim in the courtroom — Morton, who lost his wife, 25 years of freedom and a chance to raise his 3-year-old son, Eric."
